THE PERSIAN GABBEH 

This type of rug is popular among tribes of the Zagros mountains including Kurdish, Luri and Ghashghai tribes. The Gabbeh is usually crafted by women.

'Gabbeh' carpet is much thicker and coarser than other Persian carpets; sometimes it is as much as one inch in depth. In fact, it is more of a variety of kilim than carpet. The word 'Gabbeh' comes from the Persian meaning raw, natural, uncut. This is a beautiful nomadic carpet with unique tribal designs.

Gabbeh weavers may be telling a story, depicting a landscape or scene, or even conveying an emotion. Most commonly Gabbeh will be asymmetric and woven to tell a story, with figures and symbols depicting parts of the weaver's "tale". It is this subjective and random process that renders a genuine Gabbeh a completely unique work of art, distinct from other Persian rugs and from many other types of weaving or knotting in general.
